The Good That Came From My Sexual Abuse

Your pain in this life doesn’t have to go to waste.

Years ago that would have been hard for me to write.

Here’s why. When I was eight years old I was sexually abused by a grade school teacher in 3rd grade. And then later on by a janitor at a daycare center. These painful episodes led to a broken view of myself, women, God and life in general. For years, I could only leave broken people in my wake. I was hurting, selfish, and angry.

Then the sun came up. God in his goodness and mercy shined a light on my numb, parched soul. Through Christ, I found that not only were my sins covered through the cross, so was my shame. Slowly, in time, forgiveness came for those that hurt me. Then God asked of me the unthinkable: to comfort those with a similar story.

The idea that the horrific sexual abuse I endured when I was a child could be of any future value to me or anyone else seemed ludicrous and sick. Little did I know that God was going to build a bridge of hope for others with my testimony. And yet here I am today having shared my story countless times with people hurting under similar circumstances.

Here’s the truth: The comfort God gives us to endure suffering isn’t just for us.

Read the words of the Apostle Paul:

2 Cor. 1:3-5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.

Did you catch that? God “comforts us in all our affliction” so that “we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the same comfort…”

When shared with others, God’s comforting hand in our painful story can be a much needed beacon of hope for someone walking in darkness.

Share this comfort with others:

Share a scripture that held you up in the midst of pain.

Share about the peace that came when peace seemed unattainable.

Share about God’s perfect timing and how he came through.

And share how he’s still walking you out of the woods.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that God’s hand delivered comfort for you is only for you. Pass it on.

Your turn. How has God used your story to help others?  I’d love to hear from you here!
